Take a look a this photo of a storm cloud rolling in over Katherine’s  old World War II Airstrip located just out the back of the resort.

I love this time of the year in Katherine – it’s unbelievable to see some of the light shows in the sky! It is the quieter time of the year to come and visit, but there are still plenty of things to do to keep you busy should you decide to make the most of our reduced Wet Season rates.

The Katherine Museum, located next to the airstrip pictured above, is open daily from 9am-4pm and has many historical photographs and objects of significance. Spend an hour or two learning the history of the NT and the Katherine region, and then grab a cuppa from the Tea Room and relax under the big trees.

Nitmiluk Tours are still running their Nit Nit Dreaming 2 gorge cruise, and will continue to do so until water levels get too high. It’s beautiful seeing the gorges at this time of the year as everything is so green and luscious, and there are even waterfalls which spill over the high cliffs into the water below.

The Katherine Hot Springs are unfortunately under water due to recent rain, however the Mataranka Hot Springs which are only 50 minutes drive  south are still accessible. Have a look at this photo I took on a recent trip to the Bitter Springs in Mataranka… enticing isn’t it!

Mataranka Bitter Springs - No crocs here!

So if you can manage to get a few days away during the Christmas holidays come visit Katherine – there’s always plenty to do!

Seasons greetings,

Bronwyn
