The Story Behind the Name
Our Bistro’s name commemorates one of Katherine’s strong and courageous pioneering women.
Knotts Crossing Resort and Katie’s Bistro are named in honour of Fred and Katie Emma Knott, who owned and ran the ‘Crossing’ store for many years from 1929.
The original ‘Crossing’ became known as Knotts Crossing when the Knotts gained the store licence.
Katie Emma, as she was known, was renowned for her strength and her courage to speak out when she thought an injustice had been done.
As testimony to her strength, Katie Emma continued to run their store after Fred died in 1935. All this, despite the focus of the area shifting from the Crossing onto Katherine township itself.
During World War II, Katie Emma was evacuated by train to Adelaide, never return to her home in the territory. She became ill a short while after arriving in Adelaide, and passed away on the 23 June 1943.
